Dutch East Restuarant

Franschhoek restaurants take food very seriously.  It is not for nothing that, crammed with prize-winning restaurants, Franschhoek is known as the Gourmet Capital of South Africa.  Cuisine is meant to do more than just feed.  Each mouthful is meant to transport you into another world.  After experiencing exceptional food you should fall head over heels in love with it.  When you leave you should be yearning after it, wanting more of it.  These gourmet restaurants will leave you beckoning to return with tastes you will never forget.  With pristine streets lovingly set in a European setting taking you on a trip to France amongst the vineyards and valleys, gorgeous mountainous backdrops it is a place you will never forget.

Basically after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in France in 1685, when Protestantism was outlawed, hundreds of so-called Huguenots fled their homeland, 277 of them arriving by ship at the Cape of Good Hope.  Many of them were given land by the Dutch colonial government in a valley called Oliphanstshoek , soon after they settled here, it became known as Franschhoek (French Corner).  You can really still feel their presence..

A great suggestion to start your day while in Franschhoek is to pay a visit to Dutch East Restaurant.  Dutch East cuisine is a unique combination of uncomplicated bistro fare, full of traditional South African flavours with healthy portions presented beautifully.

The combination of delicate Asian flavours with robust local ingredients creates a subtle yet balanced experience.  Specialising in the preparation of meat and seafood you will find a mini butchery inside with beautifully packaged meats you can purchase.  The ambiance is welcoming as are the staff and if you chose to sit outside on the patio you will be transported to France with the hustle and bustle of the street and inside is just spectacular with a gorgeous coffee selection and beautiful interior.

From home smoked bacon, bresaola, biltong, dry aged steaks to fresh line fish and daily specials they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week.

My perfect breakfast of crispy bacon, rocket and poached eggs on ciabatta with a honey and mustard dressing
